Flexibility
“Why should I stretch more?”
1. Flexibility exercises can improve your ability to move a joint throughout its full range of motion.
2. Poor flexibility increases your chance of injury.
3. Flexibility exercises improve joint stability by increasing the strength of your tendons and muscles.
Active Isolated Stretching

This method of stretching aims to avoid activating the stretch reflex by initiating the
stretch with contraction of the muscle that opposes the muscle to be
stretched and by holding the stretch for a few seconds only.
The method is described in The Whartons’ Stretch Book by Jim and Phil Wharton.
1. Prepare to stretch one isolated muscle at a time.
2. Actively contract the muscle that is opposite the isolated muscle.
The isolated muscle then will relax in preparation for the stretch.
3. Stretch it gently and quickly –hold the stretch for no more than two seconds.
4. Release the stretch before the muscle reacts to being stretched.
5. Do it again. (10 repeats)
Flexibility training will have a noticeable effect on your swimming performance.
